The Intimacy of Presence

The Intimacy of Presence attempts to incorporate lived–experiences that are pre- or non-verbal and to involve the viewer in the process of embodied cognition. Through engagement with the work, it is my hope that the work may elicit a sense of bodily knowing and corporeal awareness as it becomes simultaneously manifest in the body and mind.
White organza panels hang from ceiling to floor and are placed in the gallery space at varying adjacent angles. The outer boundary shape of a figure is cut out of each 10’x4’ panel and several of the panels have the cutout ‘persona’ stitched back onto them. The panels are arranged in such a way that viewers initially walk through several immediately upon entering the gallery. This sets the ‘interactive’ stage so to speak, as viewers become participants and perform the work. In this sense the panels also perform an architectural function as they lead the viewer through the work and through the space.
As one moves through the open silhouette of each ‘persona’, sensations of touching and being touched (by the fabric) are simultaneously elicited creating a conscious awareness of one’s embodied self. Sublimely sensed, invisible yet fully implied, the absence of the silhouetted body animates sensory perception and offers the sensation of passing ‘through’ another person. This mind-body synthesis of embodied cognition becomes the focus of one’s encounter with the artwork. Its engagement is with pre-verbal meanings of the world, meanings that are incorporated and lived rather than only understood intellectually.

SOUL LOVE (MY LOVE AIN´T NO LOVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE)

Zunächst war SOUL LOVE ein Buchprojekt von Christian Helbock.
Ein Künstler-Buch, das lediglich aus Soul-Sätzen besteht.
„Es ist eine Art Partitur dialogischen Sprechens, eine Phänomenologie
der Liebe in Form von Liebes-Sätzen oder Liebes-Titeln.“ (Christian Helbock) Ausgangspunkt waren Vinylplatten, Soul-Singles bzw. deren Titel.
Dann kamen sogenannte Sleeves dazu, originale Plattenhüllen, die per Gummistempel händisch mit dem Signet: SOUL LOVE bedruckt wurden.
Anlässlich einer Performance in der Galerie für zeitgenössische Kunst
in Leipzig entstand 2010 das Video SOUL LOVE (SINGLES), dass den DJ
bto spider bei seiner Arbeit zeigt.

Als Weiterführung und partizipatorisches Angebot versteht sich die neue Installation SOUL LOVE (MY LOVE AIN´T NO LOVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE).
Alle Soul-Sätze des Buches werden nebeneinander an der Wand präsentiert.
Das Buch wird in den Raum übertragen. Die Besucher sind eingeladen diese geschriebenen Sätze im Sprechen zu aktualisieren und sich so anzueignen.
Jede/r BesucherIn kann so seinen/ihren Liebes-Satz akustisch aufnehmen lassen und erhält als Gegengabe die betreffende Buchseite ausgedruckt und signiert.
Es ist ein aktivierendes Tauschgeschäft zwischen Künstlern, Besuchern und Repräsentanten der Kunstinstitution. Sämtliche Aufnahmen ergeben ein Sprechbuch, der Schrift wird ihre Lautlichkeit, ihre Musikalität zurückgegeben.
Später wird dieses Sprachmaterial auf eine Schallplatte gepresst, eine neue Single entsteht: SOUL LOVE (MY LOVE AIN´T NO LOVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE).

Im Kunstverein Baden wird neben der Installation auch das Video SOUL LOVE (SINGLES) und die Serie SOUL LOVE (SLEEVES) zu sehen sein.

Am 15. Juni zelebriert Fm4 High Spirits-Priester bto spider einen seiner seltenen Gottesdienste, natürlich unter dem Motto: SOUL LOVE.
