Drawing the Line
The project space known as the “Living Room” is available to members of the Kunstverein for the presentation of current works or ongoing projects. In the exhibition Tynnu'r Llynell / Drawing the Line, curated by Cornelia König, works by Welsh artist Chris Bird-Jones are on view, including chalk drawings, prints, and projections.
"Drawing the line: to know at what point an activity or situation stops being reasonable and starts to become unacceptable. If you draw the line at a particular activity, you refuse to do it, because you disapprove of it or because it is more extreme than what you normally do. This is how I am feeling with the current world situation where pollution and destruction prevails each day. I want to draw the line, step off and stop the racing decline of species.
This project started in 2021 during my residency in Baden, whilst finding my way by trusting and following painted lines on tree trunks in the woods above the city. It has led me to now ask the question – where do you draw the line? The work developed from this initial exploration will form the basis for the presentation."
Chris Bird-Jones
Fascinated by the phenomenal nuances of refracted light and shadow, and how this affects our perception of the world, Chris Bird-Jones attempts to harness this playful transience when making art. Recent work has evolved from revisiting place and landscape that inspires her, reconnecting anew with ideas and inspiration, dynamic interactive ‘ways of being’ that exist in three layers – identity, awareness and navigation. And also in three dimensions – ways of feeling, ways of relating to others, and ways of doing. Ideas emerge through daily walking, experimentation in making, drawing, filming, photographing, glass play, dialogue and input from the community.
